The "bird" grasshoppers of the genus Schistocerca are very large insects. This Green Bird Grasshopper, Schistocerca shoshone, was over two inches. They are also very wary. I had to coax this one into position using a small branch.

A shield bug on the shingle bank at Porlock Weir. Thin pickings! I reckon this is a Forest Bug (Pentatoma rufipes), which will have strayed from the woodland that slopes onto Exmoor.

This male Arroyo Grasshopper, Heliastus benjamini, is on a hot rock. Notice how he is propping himself as far off the stone as possible.
