Just a generation ago the Stour was in a sad state. Heavy pollution had taken its toll and turned it into a virtually lifeless river. For years the Stour was famous not for its wildlife but for the rainbow-coloured dyes that flowed into it from the local carpet manufacturing units. …

This is the White-top Pitcher Plant (Sarracenia leucophylla). Visiting bugs slip down the small hairs that line the surface around the pitcher and fall into a pool of liquid. In this liquid are digestive enzymes so the plant can "eat" the fallen prey. This plant was found in the Apalachicola …
