Variegated meadowhawk

Dragonflies like this male Variegated Meadowhawk, Sympetrum corruptum, are usually in abundance at desert wetlands (Roy P. Drachman Agua Caliente Regional Park outside of Tucson in this case). This year has seen a severe shortage of insects in general.

Coffee-loving pyrausta moth

The Coffee-Loving Pyrausta moth, Pyrausta tyralis, is a colorful, albeit diminutive, insect. This one at the Tucson Botanical Gardens may well have been on caffeine. It was very skittish and difficult to approach.

Thread-waisted wasp

Thread-waisted wasps in the genus Ammophila are usually quite wary and difficult to image, but this one was preoccupied sipping nectar from the blossom of a Fendler’s Globemallow in Brown Canyon.
