I know! What are these colorful Pipevine Swallowtail caterpillars (Battus philenor) doing out in broad daylight, and away from their host plant? Well, pipevine is a sprawling groundcover plant, and during the heat of the day the air can be cooler just above the ground by several degrees of magnitude.

The Gulf Fritillary, Agraulis vanillae, is quite beautiful as a caterpillar, too. This one at the Tucson Botanical Gardens had made short work of its passionflower vine host plant.

This one may be difficult. I had to keep lowering my camera to try and find this bug. Good Luck! This is actually the easier photo of the 4 photos I took to see the bug.
